Fall Prevention Awareness Day: Learn What You Can Do

Are you a professional, caregiver, or family member of an older adult? September 23 is National Fall Prevention Awareness Day, and we want to help raise awareness to prevent falls in the older adult population.

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury-related emergency department visits for older adults? Because of this, several states and countries worldwide are getting together to address this growing public health issue. They are working closely with occupational therapy practitioners to put a plan in place to reduce falls and you can help them.

This September will be the 10th annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day and is sponsored by the National Council on Aging. The theme this year is Take a Stand to Prevent Falls, and the main purpose of this day is to raise awareness and prevent falls in the older adult population.

Last year, 48 states participated in Falls Prevention Awareness Day and more than 70 national organizations. Let spread the word and get all 50 states involved in this safety awareness by sharing with your friends and family.

If you are looking for ideas and resources, check out this Falls Prevention Toolkit, which includes a how-to guide along with various instructions on how you can be involved. Be sure to email fa*******@nc**.org if your organization participates in a fall-prevention activity so that you can be counted by NCOA.
