This week, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is focusing on Older Driver Safety Awareness to help everyone understand the importance of mobility and transportation for older adults so they know that transportation will not be a barrier and they can remain active in the community.
Occupational therapy practitioners are encouraged to share their experiences during the week on CommunOT.
Some key focal points regarding this topic include:
- Anticipate changes that can affect driving.
Getting older happens to all of us whether we like it or not. Each of us will change at different times and in different ways during our aging process, we just need to be aware of that and plan for transportation needs. - Family conversations.
There is no better time than the holiday season to sit down and talk to your family about the importance of older driver safety. - Screening and evaluations with an occupational therapist.
Make it a point to schedule you or your older relative’s appointment with the occupational therapist today to get a check-up. - Interventions can empower drivers and families.
Driver intervention is an important topic that needs to be discussed with your therapist or doctor. Take time to draw up a plan based on the results of your evaluation with the therapist. - Stay engaged in the community with or without a car.
It is so important for older adults to stay in touch with their communities. Be sure you and your loved ones have a plan in place so they can stay engaged.
